A happy school of little fish lived in a corner of the sea somewhere.
바닷속 한 구석에 작은 물고기들이 떼를 지어 행복하게 살고 있었습니다.
They were all red, Only one of them was as black as a mussel shell.
모두 빨간 물고기들이었죠.그 가운데 한 마리만이 홍합껍질처럼 새까만 색이었습니다.
He swam faster than his brothers and sisters. His name was Swimmy.
이름은 으뜸헤엄이 였어요. 다른 친구들보다 헤엄을 잘 쳤기 때문이지요.
One bad day a tuna fish, swift, fierce and very hungry, came darting through the waves.
어느날,무섭고 날쎈 다랑어 한 마리가 물결을 헤치고 쏜살같이 헤엄쳐 왔습니다. In one gulp he swallowed all the little red fish. Only Swimmy escaped.배가 고픈 다랑어는 빨간 물고기 떼를 한입에 꿀꺽 삼켜 버렸어요.
He swam away in the deep wet world.
으뜸헤엄이만 겨우 도망을 쳤습니다.으뜸헤엄이는 바닷속 깊이 헤엄쳐 들어갔습니다.
He was scared, lonely and very sad.
무섭고 외롭고 슬펐어요.
But the sea was full of wonderful creatures, and as he swam from marvel to marvel Swimmy was happy again.
하지만 바닷속은 신기한 것들로 가득 차 있었어요. 여기저기 헤엄쳐 다녔더니 으뜸헤엄이는 다시 행복해졌어요.
He saw a medusa made of rainbow jelly. . .
무지개빛 해파리도 보고. . .
a lobster, who walked about like a water-moving machine. . .
물지게를 진 것처럼 기어다니는 가재도 보고
strange fish, pulled by an invisible thread. . .
눈에 안보이는 끈에 매달려 가는 듯한 이름 모를 물고기들
a forest of seaweeds growing from sugar-candy rocks. . .
달콤한 사탕같은 바위에서 자라는 물풀 숲
an eel whose tail was almost too far away to remember. . .
너무 길어서 어디가 시작이고 어디가 끝인지 알기 어려운 뱀장어
and sea anemones,who looked like pink palm trees swaying in the wind.
분홍빛 야자나무가 바람에 흔들리는 것 같은 말미잘도 보았어요.
Then, hidden in the dark shade of rocks and weeds, he saw a school of little fish, just like his own.
그런데 그 바위와 물풀 사이에 으뜸헤엄이와 꼭같은 작은 물고기 떼가 숨어 있는 것이 보였어요.
"Let's go and swim and play and SEE things!" he said happily.
얘들아, 함께 헤엄치면서 놀고 구경도 다니자.
"We can't," said the little red fish. "The big fish will eat us all.“
안돼. 큰 물고기들한테 잡아 먹혀.
"But you can't just lie there," said Swimmy. "We must THINK of something."그렇다고 언제까지 거기 숨어 만 있을거니? 무슨 수를 생각해 봐야지,
Swimmy thought and thought and thought.
으뜸헤엄이는 생각하고 생각하고 또 생각했어요.
Then suddenly he said,"I have it!"좋은 수가 있어.
"We are going to swim all together like the biggest fish in the sea!"우리가 함께 바닷속에서 제일 큰 물고기 모양을 만들어서 헤엄치는거야.
He taught them to swim close together, each in his own place.
으뜸헤엄이는 빨간물고기들에게 서로 가까이 붙어 자기자리에서 헤엄을 치면 된다고 가르쳐 주었어요.
and when they had learned to swim like one giant fish, he said, "I'll be the eyes."빨간 물고기들이 커다란 물고기 모양을 이루면서 헤엄칠 수 있게 되자 으뜸헤엄이가 말했어요. 나는 눈이될게.
And so they swam in the cool morning water and in the midday sun and chased the big fish away.
그렇게 하여 작은 물고기들은 시원한아침에도, 한낮의 햇살 아래에서도 헤엄을 치며 큰 물고기들을 쫒아버렸어요.
